Caffeine Should Not Be Confused with Substance Addiction

Experts state that the amount of caffeine found in beverages we frequently consume throughout the day does not cause addiction, and when intake does not exceed the recommended level, it can be beneficial.

Specialist Dietitian Banu Topalakçı Salman, in her statements about caffeine consumption, noted that coffee is the most common source of caffeine, but it is also present in tea, chocolate, energy drinks, and cola. She pointed out that in recent years, while discussing pleasure-giving drinks such as tea, coffee, and cola, the term “addiction” has often been used, sparking debates about whether caffeine-containing foods and beverages are addictive. However, Salman emphasized that caffeine is considered a mild stimulant and, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), comparing caffeine consumption with substance addiction is not accurate.

Referring to scientific studies, Salman explained that people can reduce or even completely quit caffeine consumption without experiencing the serious psychological or physical problems that are typically caused by true addictions. “Individuals’ sensitivity to caffeine varies greatly depending on factors such as frequency of consumption, dosage, body weight, and physical condition. Some people can consume caffeinated products even late at night without noticeable changes in their sleep, while others may experience insomnia even after a small amount of caffeine,” she said.

HELPS BURN CALORIES

Salman noted that in recent years, many studies have been conducted on the effects of caffeine on health. These studies reveal that individuals who consume moderate amounts of caffeine may experience temporary improvements in memory and reasoning abilities. She added that recent research also shows caffeine can have positive effects on athletic performance and endurance.

“Another recent study indicates that caffeine reduces the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Similarly, caffeine is said to have beneficial effects such as increasing energy expenditure to help burn more calories and reducing asthma attacks. However, as with all foods and beverages, we must be careful not to exceed the recommended intake of caffeinated and sugar-containing products,” Salman explained.

HOW MUCH CAFFEINE DO DIFFERENT DRINKS CONTAIN?

Moderate caffeine intake for adults is considered to be between 300 and 400 mg per day. Looking at this evaluation and the caffeine levels in different drinks, espresso and Turkish coffee contain the highest amounts of caffeine, while energy drinks, cola, and fruit-flavored iced teas contain the least.
